DAP welcomes the release of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi with the hope that it will bring a new effort to bring democracy and freedom in Myanmar.
When Aung San Suu Kyi was released from detention of a total of 15 years yesterday, among her first words she uttered to her supporters in Rangoon were: “I’m very happy to see you all again”. Yes indeed. We too are very happy to see you, Aung San Suu Kyi.
For many years, you have been our inspiration for peace, democracy, human rights and freedom. We share your struggle against discrimination, oppression and blatant abuse of human rights.
We will definitely continue to support you in your endeavour to achieve a truly free and democratic Burma, together with all our friends not only in this region but all over the globe.
Now that you are free to lead the democracy movement once again, we will certainly support your call for the people to work in unison as it is the only way to achieve the goals for a free and democratic nation.
DAP also calls on the military government of Myanmar to release all other political prisoners. It is also a reminder to all other countries to free their political prisoners as well as those detained without trial including in our own beloved Malaysia.
To have a truly free and democratic Southeast Asia, ASEAN leaders must be brave enough to embrace true democracy by having, among other things, free and fair elections as well as political and institutional reforms, as soon as possible.
