约翰.方思敦博士（John Funston）是著名的澳籍东南亚区域研究学者，曾在多个东南亚国家的大学或研究所工作，包括从1972年至1976年间在我国的国民大学执教。他的研究领域是大马与泰国政治，其1980年出版的《马来西亚的马来人政治：巫统与回教党研究》，至今仍然是研究大马政治的必读参考。
《马来西亚前锋报》的Awang Selamat就曾因为方思敦撰写关于马哈迪辞职的评论文章，而称他为对大马和马哈迪医生不坏好意的“主要批评者”。
