昨日（17日）我在国会会议提出建议，要求国会下议院增加开会天数以避免开会至深夜，并在国会大厅腾出更多空间以安顿出席采访的新闻媒体。 换句话说，当局限制新闻从业员人数进入国会采访之举，非常不利于议会民主精神。事实上，国会应给予媒体各项采访新闻的便利，好让民众更了解庄严国会内开会情形。 由此，我在首相署部长拿督斯里阿莎丽娜的答复时段中提出想法，建议在国会议员休息厅隔壁建设临时办事处供部门职员办公，从而用整个国会大厅来安置传媒。 马来西亚国会跟世界上其他国会不一样，我们的国会并无一个委员会制度，以监督各部门表现，并且对各部门预算进行细致审查。 因此，国会会议成为国会议员审查政府的唯一平台，然而其开会天数却大副减少，令人担忧。 例如在2008年，国会下议院总共开会79天；; 2009年开会72天； 2010年开会83天；2011年开会63天，2012年开会70天；2013年开会51天；2014年开会57天；以及2015年开会61天。 反观英国国会下议院2013-2014季度总共开会162天，而澳洲国会则一般每年开会150天。除了上述的会议，这些国会还拥有非常健全的委员会辩论与审议，而马来西亚国会却尚未采纳这样的做法。 政府对国会缩短开会天数的说法是：国会大厦正在装修当中，目前的临时会议厅只好上议院和下议院共同使用。 有鉴于此，我国会下议院议长丹斯里班迪卡阿敏提出建议，即：政府不妨考虑在吉隆坡一带的文化建筑，例如国家皇宫旧址，用作上议院开会的地点，那么国会上、下议院都能够延长会议天数，可谓一举两得。 我也认为，国会下议院应在2016年至少开会80天。 （刘镇东于2015年11月18日，在国会召开新闻发布会所发表的声明。）
